以被褥为例，被褥一般由胎料和外表的纺织物两部分组成，胎料又有絮胎和散纤之分。散纤状的被褥胎芯结构和形状不固定，易流动缩团，厚度不均匀。为了使被褥外层纺织物与内芯之间贴紧固定，使被褥厚薄均匀，将外层纺织物与内芯以并排直线或装饰图案式地缝合（包括缝编）起来，这种增加美感与实用性的工序，称为绗缝。
Take the quilt as an example. The quilt is generally composed of two parts: the tire material and the outer textile fabric. The tire material is divided into flocculent tire and loose fiber. The structure and shape of the loose fiber bedding core are not fixed, it is easy to flow and shrink, and the thickness is not uniform. In order to make the outer fabric and the inner core of the quilt close and fixed, and make the thickness of the quilt even, the outer fabric and the inner core are sewed (including stitching) in a side-by-side straight line or decorative pattern, which is called quilting.
